Recorded Audition Requirements

Song and Sheet Music Guidelines:

You must upload a video recorded performance of one song in the Music Theatre genre.

  • You are required to present your one song in full – this audition does not require an audition cut. Instrumental sections may be removed to allow for a more coherent performance. These edits are at the discretion of the applicant.
  • Applicants should feel free to sing in the accent most appropriate for the song and in line with their performance.
  • The backing tracks used are the responsibility of the applicant.
  • Any tracks used should have no other vocals included in them.
  • Applicants are not required  to submit sheet music for this audition.

Monologue Guidelines:

You must upload a video recorded performance of one monologue of your choice.

  • The monologue can be sourced from musicals, plays or film and TV.
  • A selection of monologues will also be available via this link if students are unsure of which monologue to pick.
  • Pieces should be approximately 1 minute in length.
  • Monologues must be presented from memory.

Dance Assessment:

You must upload one video-recorded dance audition.

  • This component of the audition must focus on a technical piece of choreography.
  • Students are welcome to choreograph their own dance or use the instructional video below to submit.
  • Self-choregraphed submissions should be at least at the level in the demonstration video.
  • Pieces should be approximately 1 minute in length.
  • The backing track for the dance routine featured in the videos below can be found here – Youtube or Spotify

Recording your Audition:

  • Oxygen College does not expect applicants to purchase/hire specialised equipment for the filming of their audition tape. Basic equipment such as smartphones, iPad or laptop devices are usually sufficient for recording.
  • An effective audition tape will be one where we can see and hear you.
  • Applicants will submit their video audition by providing a link to their personally housed video-recorded audition (i.e private Youtube, Vimeo etc). Applicants need to make sure that their videos are not set to private viewing only or password protected. You will cut and paste your link into the audition form
  • Each of your monologue, song and dance must be one take (each). There is to be no editing.
  • Submissions need to be quickly edited into one long video including all three takes, to save us dealing with lots of different links.
  • Refrain from using back lighting and check the audio and quality of light before submitting your tape.
  • Please remember that each of your vocal, monologue and dance auditions are designed to show us how effectively you can communicate a story. This is done by engaging your full instrument, i.e. your voice and body. So please allow us to see more of you when it is appropriate to do so.
  • We understand that it may not be possible to always have a full body shot, so a mid-shot is also sufficient.
  • Perform your monologues and song predominantly toward the camera.

Callback Audition:

Shortlisted applicants selected from the recorded audition submissions will be invited to attend an in-person callback audition.

second round callback auditions will take place in person at the Geelong West Oxygen College Campus & Geelong Arts Centre on a date TBC.

Applicants need to make sure they are available for this day.

During the callback, applicants will be asked to:

  • Perform the same song and monologue from their video audition.
  • Participate in a group choreography call where they will be required to learn and perform a short piece of choreography.

Details about the specific times and requirements for the callback audition will be provided in the callback notification email.

How will I be assessed?:

Your video audition will be evaluated by the Oxygen College Musical Theatre staff according to the following criteria:

    • Demonstrated physical, vocal and creative skills
    • Performance presence including coordination, poise and focus
    • Ability to embody text and creative skills convincingly
    • Emotional and imaginative engagement with the material
    • Interpretation and performance of a song

In the callback audition, shortlisted applicants will be evaluated by the Oxygen College Musical Theatre staff according to the following criteria:

  • Showcase current vocal ability and potential for growth
  • Display physical and kinaesthetic awareness in dance/movement, with potential for further development
  • Responsively incorporate imaginative direction
  • Collaborate effectively, demonstrating flexibility and openness.
