Please introduce yourself.

My name is Emily, I sing and play guitar. I’m 22 and I’m from Geelong.

How would you describe the genre of music you play?

I love to sing a lot of different genres, like jazz, soul, blues and flamenco. When I play guitar though, I mainly play traditional Spanish and Portuguese folk songs.

Can you tell us about your musical journey to this point, when did you start performing etc?

I was always singing (pretty much once I started talking), and taught myself. I was mainly raised on flamenco and learnt most of what I know about music from that genre. I performed through out school but never seriously, until I was 19 when I started a band with my cousin. We’ve now been performing for about 4 years and for the past couple of years I’ve also been performing, with a Spanish flamenco group.

As an artist, what is your biggest strength? And what is something you need to improve?

My biggest strength is my voice and performing with a band. The things I most need to improve on is my confidence playing guitar and sharing my original ideas with others.

Do you write your own music, tell us about your writing process? Where, when, with what?

I’ve got a lot of lyrics and poetry that I have written in books and am always writing ideas down in my phone. I usually start with lyrics, having an idea of how I’d like the melody to sound, then creating some ideas on the guitar to go with that.

Name one person in your life that shaped your musical interests and influences and describe how so.

My dad has shaped all my musical interests and influences. He plays flamenco guitar and raised me on great guitarists like Paco de lucia and Tomatito. He also introduced me to Jimi Hendrix, which helped me discover genres that shaped my musical influences today.

You can colab with one musician dead or alive, who is it?

I would have loved to work with Jeff Buckley. He’s a huge influence of mine vocally and it would have been amazing to perform with him, and just have got the chance to meet him.
